The
red squirrel or
Eurasian red squirrel  is a species of tree squirrel in the genus
Sciurus common throughout Eurasia.
The red squirrel is an arboreal, omnivorous rodent. In Great Britain, Italy and
Ireland, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years, a decline associated
with the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel
 from North America,
 although
habitat loss is also a factor. The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body
length of 19 to 23 cm.
